Purpose of an HMG Neighborhood

An HMG Neighborhood provides an authentic expression of God's grace and love through Christ-centered community. These supportive relationships between intentional neighbors create opportunities and spaces for residents to express God's love through service, outreach and evangelism. The vision of an  HMG Neighborhood   is neighbors, communities and the world transformed by the Gospel. Biblical principles ground HMG Neighborhoods to be communities in the world but not of the world, sent to be blessings in repentance and freedom, and through humble and sacrificial lives transformed by the Gospel, living together as stewards of creation, towards mercy and justice, and filled with hope.

Christian Community
The first purpose of an HMG Neighborhood is to live by the Holy Spirit in fellowship as a community of the Gospel. An HMG Neighborhood supports spiritual friendships through which families and individuals care for one another’s spiritual, relational and material needs. These residents are committed to living together as an expression of God's love to each other and to the world. By a return to an Acts 2 model of community life, service and resource sharing, the neighborhood opens up opportunities to live by the Holy Spirit in response to the Gospel of Christ’s love together. By living together in closer proximity in a walkable neighborhood, HMG Neighborhood residents can more easily bear one another's burdens through spiritual friendship and support. Space is created for discipleship and seeking and knowing God together on a daily basis through informal life groups and bible studies. As an intentionally local expression of the church, residents are able to spend more time together in worship, prayer and ministry and can more easily integrate everyday life (taking care of kids, eating meals, doing chores, running errands) into a spiritual community. It is a place where residents are encouraged to make sacrifices together and to live full of generosity and joy in God's abundance. These life giving relationships counter the forces of isolated individualism and autonomy which separate and internalize aspects of faith and life, and, instead, embraces an inter-dependent community model which is characterized by intimacy, love, and mutual support.

Gospel Neighboring and Gospel Messaging
The second purpose of an HMG Neighborhood is to live in response to God's grace sharing the Good News and the message of the Gospel. An HMG Neighborhood supports Christians committed to both Gospel Neighboring and Gospel Messaging. Gospel Neighboring identifies with and meets the needs of all people around in the name of Christ. These acts of love and mercy reflect and flow out of God's gift of grace which is the Good News. By intentionally shifting each resident's path of life more closely with people in need of God's love, this incarnational ministry allows for day-to-day contact with people to practically demonstrate God's righteousness and justice, as well as His love and grace. Each person's gifts and resources are used by the Holy Spirit to meet neighbors' needs in Christ’s name through deep, need-meeting relationships built within the neighborhood and with those in the wider community. Gospel Messaging encourages all people to believe, receive and live in response to the Good News of new life and wholeness through Jesus. By living incarnationally, followers of Christ attractively proclaim and demonstrate the Good News which is the opportunity of forgiveness of sin and the promise of reconciliation with God and one another. Together the community encourages each other to reject self-salvation through religion and good works and instead to embrace an utter and daily reliance on God's grace. An HMG Neighborhood expresses God's love through service, outreach and evangelism through both Gospel Neighboring and Gospel Messaging.

Incarnational Christian Service to Those in Need
The third purpose of an HMG Neighborhood is to live God's call to seek the peace and prosperity of the city in the restorative power of the Gospel. An HMG Neighborhood supports neighborhoods in need to seek their shalom wholeness and total flourishment. Committing to life in an HMG Neighborhood is a practical way to follow Christ's example of sacrifice for others by living with and identifying with those in need in their neighborhoods. Residents do this by intentionally sharing common space and resources in order to consume less individually and give more to those in need. An HMG Neighborhood provides safe and affordable homes for individuals and families in need. Following the Holy Spirit, the HMG Neighborhood provides a place where local churches can care, serve, and bless and be involved with the poor in service. Through the Gospel, an HMG Neighborhood is a place where God's mercy and justice are expressed together, both through generous sacrificial giving at an individual level and the redemption of the social fabric broken by sin. Each HMG Neighborhood is also a base for love and outreach to the wider community expressed in lives poured out in deeds of compassion, healing and service to the poor and those in need.
